NASA must address space debris crisis

Space junk orbiting the earth, which has disabled satellites and nearly hit the International Space Station, represents a growing threat that NASA needs to deal with better, the National Research Council said in a report released today.

NASA has projected that the amount of debris has reached a “tipping point” in which abandoned equipment, spent rocket bodies and other refuse floating around the planet will continue colliding, threatening spacecraft and satellites.

The current space environment is growing increasingly hazardous to spacecraft and astronauts,” said Donald Kessler, a former head of NASA’s orbital debris office who served as chairman of the group of academics and industry officials that wrote the report.

The report found that NASA has used its resources for orbital debris responsibly. But the problem will require international cooperation, and electronic assembly removing existing debris would be expensive and difficult, the report said. “Clearly we are not doing enough to solve the threat,” said Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, R-Calif., who has warned repeatedly about the dangers of space junk. “Although we have reached the tipping point where the problem will get worse and worse, we have no national strategy to eliminate this space garbage.”

Federal authorities are tracking 22,000 objects, each at least 10 centimeters long. The risk is that these larger objects, typically traveling more than 20,000 mph, could destroy a satellite or spacecraft. The amount of debris is growing quickly as more countries launch objects into space.

The National Research Council report, which was sponsored by NASA, urges the agency to better coordinate its debris efforts because a variety of offices that deal with the issue don’t have a single management or budget structure.

NASA needs to determine the best path forward for tackling the multifaceted problems caused by meteoroids and orbital debris that put human and robotic space operations at risk,” Kessler said.

The Defense Department has studied using nets or harpoons to grab larger pieces of space junk. But those techniques haven’t been tested in space. Astronauts have retrieved satellites in the space shuttle’s cargo bay, but the shuttle program has ended.

The international goal now is to avoid further explosions that leave debris in space and to have everything launched into orbit fall back to earth 25 years later. The U.S. has created 30 percent of the debris. Because of political rivalries with countries such as Russia and China, the report urges NASA to include the State Department in legal and diplomatic talks to reduce debris.

Low silver lead-free alloys have been shown to have superior drop shock performance, but people have questioned whether or not their thermal cycle performance is adequate. This paper will discuss these issues.

Dr. Lasky will also be presenting the tutorial Lead-Free Assembly for High Yields and Reliability, which will provide a framework for discussion of quality, manufacturability and reliability, and for examination of material properties and design parameters. It will also explore options for increasing the reliability of electronics assemblies.

In addition, Dr. Lasky will moderate Minimizing Defects in Assembly Processing.

Dr. Lee is a world-renown soldering expert and an SMTA Member of Distinction. He has extensive experience in the development of high-temperature polymers, encapsulants for microelectronics, underfills, and adhesives. His current research electronic assembly interests cover advanced materials for interconnects and packaging for electronics and optoelectronics applications, with emphasis on both high performance and low cost of ownership.

Dr. Lasky has more than 30 years experience in electronic and optoelectronic packaging and assembly, including work at IBM, Universal Instruments and Cookson Electronics. He has authored or edited five books on science, electronics, and optoelectronics, as well as several technical papers and articles for Scientific American. Dr. Lasky holds numerous patent disclosures and is the developer of several new concepts in SMT processing software relating to cost estimating, line balancing and process optimization. He is the co-creator of engineering certification exams in electronics assembly and is the director of Dartmouth's Six Sigma Program. Dr. Lasky was awarded the SMTA Founder's Award in 2003. 中消協提醒消費者,購買時要考慮好淨水的保養和售後服務。為保證淨水效果及防止二次污染,淨水機的保養和售後服務非常重要,特別是要根據額定出水總淨水量按時更換濾芯。同時,不同地區、不同樓層所產生的水壓不穩定也會對機器壽命造成很大影響,消費者可以選擇“高標準承壓”產品,以確保水質始終安全、機器經久耐用。
    
按衛生部規定,淨水器不允許添加功能性材料,也不允許宣傳除淨水作用外的其他功能,不允許宣傳有任何治療疾病的療效。所以消費者看到其他功能的宣傳時不要輕信。

健康的生活離不開淨水器
